Surrounded by Nature - Inspired by Nature

In 1999 Trish closed her natural food store to start a new chapter in her life as a weaver - with little formal training, relying instead on the muses "Instinct", Inspiration" and "Necessity" to guide her hand and eye. Currently, Trish’s studio is located on a lush Gulf Island in the Salishan Sea, between the mainland of BC and Vancouver Island.

Trish weaves on two 4-shaft floor looms and hand dyes silk and wool yarns for scarves, wraps, throws, tapestries, rugs and yardage. She uses primarily naturally-coloured yarns and natural dyes, some of which grow in her studio garden. All work, whether weaving, spinning or dyeing, is done by hand, without the use of automated equipment.

Using only exquisite silks and the softest merino wools for dyeing, Trish draws on the colours of her garden and the forest around her. The resulting yarn palette is rich and jewel-like yet muted - infused with honey and earth tones. Even the primary colours - the reds, blues and yellows - are softened, allowing them to wear exceptionally well in all four seasons.

Trish has returned to simpler, classic patterns that showcase the colours of her yarns, as they combine in eye-catching juxtaposition or transition gradually from one to the next. The gentle variations in her pieces attest to the one-of-a-kind, handmade origins of these textiles, so different from the predictable outcomes of automated or computerized looms. Her garments are easy-care items - perfect for both casual wear and elegant, sensual evening wear.

When not in her dye shed, weaving studio or garden, Trish is most often preparing for shows on Vancouver Island, mainland B.C. or Toronto. Her work has an international clientelle, and a recent blanket woven in red, black and white was purchased for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
